Bar review: Yialos Taverna Bar, Coral Bay

Stunning sunsets and fantastic views accompany drinks or a meal at Yialos taverna and bar in Coral Bay, Paphos.

This place is family run and is suitable for families, romantic moments or a leisurely drink with friends. It’s also a great place to take visitors if they want to experience the relaxed and traditional atmosphere of seaside Cypriot hospitality.

An expansive outdoor area – both covered and uncovered – are in use when the sun is shining and a large interior space is complete with an open fire place during cooler periods.

This restaurant doubles up as a bar, as owners happily serve guests who only want drinks – at any time during open hours.

There are many interesting walks and unspoiled countryside to explore nearby, running alongside the rocky coastline with superb views directly across the sea. Yialos opened in 2006 and is popular with locals as a venue for a sunset cocktail, a local beer or a glass of wine.

Off the beaten track, once visited customers tend to return again and again for a taste of traditional Cyprus and fantastic views.

This is a place to come if you are in the mood to unwind and service here is attentive and relaxed.

Yialos isn’t the most attractive building to look at but don’t be put off – the staff, the views, the drinks and food all make up for any shortcomings. Owner and manager Rena Charalambous says the location is a very special place for her and has deep roots with her family. Her husband, son and daughter also work alongside her.

She said: “My father had this land; I will never forget the first time that we came from the village to visit here. I was about seven years old and I couldn’t believe it. My father was a farmer and we didn’t have a car; we walked here and I saw the sea, it was amazing and I always have this picture in my mind.”

Rena, who lives in Peyia with her family, says the enterprise started out as a small kiosk with electricity supplied by a generator, more than a decade ago. “Then we got an electricity supply and built a small kitchen and then over the years we have added other parts. We work very hard and we are open every day all year round.”

During the summer months Yialos is open from 10am all day until the evening, from November to March the venue is open for drinks and meals only at lunchtime.
