Paphos singers hope to raise even more funds this year

A #PAPHOS choir that totted up thousands for a local charity last year has vowed to beat the amount this year with the help of a dedicated calendar.

The #Paphos Zingers collected €13,400 for the #Paphos Cancer Patients Support Group (CSPG) in 2013. The #Zingers are an amateur #choir founded in 2010.

“This is the third year we’re supporting the CSPG as they are a great charity, they aren’t government funded and the work they do is close to all of our hearts,” said Zinger member Karen Roe.

Some of the choir members are cancer sufferers, or have family members or friends who have been affected by various forms of the disease.

CSPG supports the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF) through fundraising. They help to provide numerous services including free home nursing, psychosocial support, travel to the oncology centre in Nicosia and a free helpline.

Roe, who describes the choir as rock/contemporary, says the Zingers always aim to have fun with their singing. Although new singers are welcome, the group now has a strong membership. They have performed at all sorts of events all over the Paphos district and last year saw them perform in Limassol for the first time.

The 43-strong member choir will kick off this year’s fundraising programme in Paphos with two dates in March. They will follow this up with a special performance of their new show in Polis Chrysochous in April

“We have called this show ‘Stage and Screen 2’- and it will feature loads of new material including songs from West End shows to songs from the movies,” said Roe.

Although the singers are all amateurs and male and female members range in age from teenagers to pensioners, their performances are becoming more polished and slicker with every event. The choir now has its own musical director, Ali Harding, and experienced vocal coach, Mel Ballard.

Roe said: “We are hoping to raise at least €15,000 this year – and as well as singing we will sell a Zingers calendar in aid of the charity.”

She jokingly assured that all members would be fully clothed in the calendar which will promote not only the Zingers and music, but also Paphos tourism.

“Each month has already been sponsored which will cover the cost of printing but we are still looking for someone to take the front cover.” The calendar will feature a theme each month and only a limited edition of 1,000 copies priced at €10 will be available.

“People are able to reserve their copies now and we are really looking forward to the entire process,” said Roe.

The first performances of the new show will be held at the Kefalos Beach Hotel in Paphos at 7pm on March 21 and 22. Tickets cost €15, all of the proceeds go to the Cancer Patients Support Group. The Zingers will then take their performance to the Polis Cultural centre on Saturday April 5; tickets are priced at €7.50.
