Troodos Mountains to get new cable car to summit.
President Anastasiades’ pre-election pledge to install a cable car that will carry visitors from the foothills of Troodos mountain to the Olympus peak, is taking off, according to a report in Phileleftheros daily on Monday.
The cable car will be installed as part of the broader plan for an upgrade of Troodos tourism, and potential investors will soon be invited to express their interest, even though the specific investment will be considered separately from the rest of the development of the area.
Three options are being looked into in terms of the cable car route: Ayios Nikolaos Kakopetria – Troodos, Platres – Troodos, and Amiantos – Troodos, with the last one gaining ground as the most financially viable one.
The basic idea is that the cable car will start from the Amiantos village, where parking will be made available, make its way toward the asbestos mine and on to Troodos square.
The idea is for a series of services to be offered along the way (start, intermediate stations, and final stop) such as small shops, cafeterias, bicycle rentals, horse riding etc.
Since the investment is expected to be significant, sources of the daily, believe it is unlikely for an investor to come forward and assume the entire cost.
What is most likely to happen, according to the daily, is for the government to undertake the construction work using European funds, with investors taking over the services to be offered, plus the administration and perhaps maintenance of the cable car.
